40-Yard Shuttle Run

In most sports what makes one athlete superior to other athletes is their ability to accelerate, stop, change direction, and re-accelerate. This test assesses all of these, which are needed to be successful in sport.

The 40-yard shuttle test assesses the ability of the athlete to do this as safely as possible. It assesses hip strength stability and coordination. Each one of these is critical for the athlete’s development and success in sports.

We perform this test by having the athlete sprint as fast as possible for 10-yards, pick up a light block, and sprint it back to the start line, set is down then repeat this set of actions one more time. Giving us 4 accelerations, 4 decelerations, and 3 changes of direction.

The 12% average decrease in the 40-yard shuttle test time is like dropping a 11 second 100-yard dash time, down to 9.68 seconds! Is this the type of speed increases you are looking for?
